Visiting national parks is a great way to take a family vacation. However, it can often mean long hours in the car and doing activities the kids might not always be interested in. Here are some tips on how to keep your kids happy while traveling.
While on Road Trips
Spending many hours in the car can be tough for kids. Here are some tips to make the trip fun:
- Pack a small gift (hit the dollar store) for each child to open on long car trip days
- Bring plenty of water and snacks
- A DVD player is an easy way to go
- Pack a favorite snuggly
- Make sure to have paper, crayons, books, and children’s music on hand
- Bring a map so the kids can see where you’re going on the trip
- Have each child bring a journal and write an entry after each park
While Hiking
To motivate children who aren’t so interested in hiking, bring along the following items:
- A child’s digital camera so they can take photos on the hike
- A pair of children’s binoculars
- A bug collecting box, although they will have to leave the items in the park
- A magnifying glass
- A water bottle with a strap they can carry themselves
- Buy child-sized Camelbaks to stay hydrated during the hike
While at the Hotel
Stop by the front desk and ask what family amenities they have to offer. Some of them might not be obvious. Also, if there is a concierge, ask about kids' activities in the area.
- Swim in the pool
- See if there is a play structure on the property
- Just getting ice from the vending machine can be fun
- Pay Per View movies or a DVD player with a movie is a good way to unwind
- Take a walk — is there a nature trail or a walk to town
- Ask if the hotel has board games
While Camping
Upon arriving at the campground, stop at the Visitors Center first so the kids can get a feel for what the campground has to offer, possibly see some exhibits, pick up a coloring book or a souvenir.
- Ask about a Jr. Ranger program
- Attend a docent or ranger-led hike
- Enjoy a campfire with smores
- Find out about kid-friendly hiking trails
- Bring an old broom so kids can sweep a path to the tent
- Check out the Visitors Center
While Eating Out
- Most restaurants offer crayons and children’s menus
- Bring some playing cards
- Read a book about the area you’re visiting
- Look at photos that taken with your camera while on the trip
- Bring postcards for kids to fill out to send to family and friends
Be creative. Mix it up. Try something new. Plan ahead and prepare for the downtimes during the trip. This will make the entire vacation
